Regional Commentary, Reports & Metrics from Fed Banks
In addition to general macroeconomic research, the 12 regional banks of the Federal Reserve conduct their own regional analysis, develop metrics and publish forecasts. This regional data is relevant to their individual districts and is often the basis for commercial economic forecasts from investment banks and research houses. The following are links to the regional research pages of the 12 Fed Banks where you will find regional Beige Books/economic indicators, commentary and locally relevant reports.
Boston Fed (1st District) - 6 New England states, home to the New England Public Policy Center.
New York Fed (2nd District) - Encompases NY State, NYC, Northern New Jersey and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It also publishes the Empire State Manufacturing Survey.
Philadelphia Fed (3rd District) - Oversees Eastern PA (including Philadelphia), Southern New Jersey and Delaware. Also publishes a regional manufacturing index, Quarterly Survey of Economic Forecasters and Professional Forecasters.
Cleveland Fed (4th District) - Composed of Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Kentucky, the State of Ohio and the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia.
Richmond Fed (5th District) - Serves DC, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and the majority of West Virginia. It also offers economic reports by states.
Atlanta Fed (6th District) - Composed of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The bank has also established the LEARN center-the members of which include academic intitutions-to expand data gathering and analysis capabilities.
Chicago Fed (7th District) - Serves the Northern portions of Illinois and Indiana, Southern Wisconsin, Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and the state of Iowa. It also publishes the Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI), Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index (CFMMI) and assists in collecting & analyzing data for the Michigan Retail Index.
St. Louis Fed (8th District) - It oversees the State of Arkansas, portions of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, the eastern half of Missouri, and West Tennessee. The St. Louis Fed also offers the largest set of vintage economic data via its ALFRED database. It also the innovator or unique data systems like CASSIDI, FRASER, GEO-FRED, Liber8 and is home to the Center for Regional Economic for the 8th District (CRE8).
Minneapolis Fed (9th District) - The 9th district is composed of the State of Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota, Northwestern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Kansas City Fed (10th District) - Kansas fed oversees the State of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, portions of Western Missouri and Northern New Mexico.
Dallas Fed (11th District) - The Dallas Fed's district is composed of the State of Texas, Northern Louisiana and Southern New Mexico. It also publishes business cycle data on the MSA's within its district, the Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey, and other regional data.
San Francisco Fed (12th District) - Spanning almost 1.3 million sq miles, the 12th district is geographically the largest district and includes the States of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands. It is also hosts the Center for Pacfic Basin Studies and the Center for Study of Innovation and Productivity.
